Our Big Fat Greek Missions Trip
One year ago today, about this time, Jason and I were frantically, last minute packing. If you know us at all, this isn't a surprise! Also unsurprising is that I tend to overpack and traveling overseas made it even worse. I lugged an almost 40 lb suitcase many miles. That night we laid in bed talking and imagining what was to come. Who would we meet, what we would be doing, if we would be nervous and unsure the whole time, and my biggest, short term concern, would I be able to function with jet lag (thankful, yes!).
Like most trips, because I'm really a child, I didn't sleep much and by the morning, full of nerves and excitement, I was ready to go. We had teary goodbyes at the airport and some amazing family praying over us and then we were off. Two flights later we landed in Amsterdam bright and early! {side note--if you know my husband, please ask him about our first flight and the havoc that ensued as we were landing in Houston}
What followed in the next two weeks was amazing, difficult, hot and sweaty, exhausting, joy filled and full of Jesus. We met the nicest people, were trained and led by incredible base staff, talked to, hugged, laughed, cried and prayed with some amazing folks that had been through unimaginable horror and managed to still smile and be so gracious. We watched atmospheres be changed from hostile to joyful, even for a brief time, with worship music. We talked and played with children that had seen more distruction and upheaval but amazed us with their resilience. I still pray for these sweet faces and hope one day they are able to have the safety and stability of home again.
At the end of it, I pray we made an impact, however big or small. I don't know how much we changed their lives, but I know for a fact they changed mine. I will always stand up for those who can't defend themselves, who need to see Jesus love in action, regardless of their beliefs, and I won't let fear get in the way of loving people that need it the most.
Proverbs 31:8-9
Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves; ensure justice for those being crushed.
Yes, speak up for the poor and helpless, and see they get justice."
